I know it is not always easy to come up with goals ideas. When I was in middle school our teacher would ask us to write our academic goals and attach them to our desks, my mind would go blur. I always knew what I wanted but it was difficult to put it into writing. My teacher would always say,” a good goal must be SMART”
The SMART is a mnemonic acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic,, and Timely. By making sure the goals you set align with the SMART criteria you can base all your focus on decision making.
While we note that our goals must be SMART we shouldn’t forget the 6 domains of self-care, which are: Personal, Physical, Emotional, Psychological, Spiritual, and professional.
In this post, I am going to help you come up with some unique self are goals to improve your emotional wellness. So grab a cup of your pen, pencils, markers, and papers, and let’s get started
PERSONAL SELF-CARE GOAL Firstly, make a list of 20 things you like about yourself. If you find this hard start with a minimum of 5 and try to add one each day.
Then make another list but of 5 things you want to improve in yourself, note that I am not asking you to write about what you want to be like a celebrity or the president daughter, I am asking you what you would like to improve on. For example, “I want to read more than I do now”.Then decide on a goal to accomplish this like, “I will read two subjects each day” and write it down on the paper. Each item was written must have a goal to accomplish it.
Once you’re done with this two-step, you can design or frame the paper and hang it on a visible spot in your room.
I would advise you to create a vision board. A vision board is a collage of images and affirmations of one’s dreams and desires, designed to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation. This can be done manually (by hand) but most people prefer using Pinterest for this.
PHYSICAL SELF-CARE GOAL Grab another paper and make a regular sleep routine consider your daily events while doing this, like we said before your goals must be SMART so make your target sleeping routine as SMART as possible.
Next, you have to aim for a healthy diet. This is very important for your physical well-being. Do not eat junk food all day, junk foods can hamper your development and may eventually make your brain weak and non-functional. I am not saying you cannot eat junk food I am just saying it should be minimized. When creating your meal plan you can always leave a day as a spoiled day, on this day you can eat junk food (moderately). I always advise people to detoxify at least once a week especially after a spoiled day. The best way to do this is by drinking warm water with lemon juice, this should be done in the morning before any meal is consumed. Instead of waking up and taking a can of soda you can switch to green tea, this can help to calm your nerve, you really don’t want to start your day feeling funny.
Go for a walk. I know a lot of people would not like to be woken up to exercise so go for a walk instead, this can help in a lot of ways, it doesn’t have to be in the morning but you should aim at taking a walk as often as you can. If you have a daily schedule please input this even if it is a ten minutes walk.
I hope you are getting along as we go and it isn’t hard to understand.
EMOTIONAL SELF-CARE GOAL This is a very important aspect of self-care and my number one goal for you is to prioritize yourself. This is something a lot of people just don’t understand. I am going to explain how this works. Prioritizing yourself does not mean you are selfish or you don’t care for others, it means you are giving yourself time and attention to focus on your needs, desires, goals, and wants. It also means offering yourself the same compassion and understanding you give to others. Take care of yourself first, if you want to eat at taco bells drive yourself to taco bells, if you want to go on vacation take yourself on that vacation, it does not have to be a private island, you can go to the beach or a game center or even to the park, just take care of yourself then you can take care of others.
Secondly, Maintain boundaries. Create a limit to identify a reasonable and safe way for other people to behave towards you and how to react when they pass that limit. Do not use vague words, be as calm as possible but don’t laugh it off and walk out of the situation. you shouldn’t be forced to be in an uncomfortable situation, no one can control you. You should consider cutting all ties with the person, do not put your mental health at stake.
Learn to forgive yourself. If you couldn’t achieve it, do not wallow about it, get up you are a warrior and you will not give up, forgive yourself now and try to be the best version of yourself. Everyone has gone through challenges, no one is perfect.
PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF-CARE GOAL I hope you still have a paper with you because we are going to get practical. You are going to write yourself a love letter, yes you are going to and you are going to frame it. You are going to start by stating the purpose of the letter, so I think it’s best if you just write, “A MESSAGE TO MYSELF”.Now you are going to recall a special moment in your life and put it into writing, Now transition to a section about the things you love about yourself, Once you are done you have to reaffirm your love and commitment and end with a line that sums up your love. Now you have to design it and frame it, you can order a frame on amazon and hang it on your wall with your other goals. The purpose of this is to put emphasis on the reason you love, admire and value yourself.
Re-read your favorite book whether it is an e-book or a printed copy take your time and replenish what you love about the book. If you don’t like to re-read a book (like me), go to your local or school library and get a good book, when I do this I love to get a recommendation from my friends maybe it is because we have similar taste but the main point is to read a book to calm you down. I love reading romance or science fiction, sometimes I enjoy reading supernatural fiction mainly because I know it’s an assumption and it’s not real.
Learn a skill or promote a hobby, Since I was little I loved writing not as an occupational path but as a hobby. I would use any new book I found and write a bedtime story in it and I will feel really accomplished after this, I saw it as a way to let my imagination go wide and create a calm scenario, it was wonderful. I also loved drawing, my friends really wanted me to go to an art class but I have always wanted to become a doctor (a specialist for sure) since I was four but that is beside the point. So figure out what you love doing or look for a skill you know you will love to do and try it. It is going to be great afterward.
Listen to a positive playlist, I really can’t be the only one out there who finds the lyrics of the song more appealing than the song.
SPIRITUAL SELF-CARE GOALS This involves taking care of your soul, you can see it as caring for our inner self and caring for ourselves on a deeper level. Cultivate a daily prayer, It pulls you closer to God. Try meditating, it helps calm the mind and soul. You can also try yoga, there is a lot of youtube yoga channel; spend time in nature; cleanse your space; practice silence, silence allows you o filter out excess noise; journal, It allows you to process your emotions and release energies that you are holding you back and lastly unplug from technology, I advise you give yourself a social media detox.
PROFESSIONAL SELF-CARE GOALS == I love to call this one self-care on the job. Try to declutter or redecorate your workplace as often as you can-A clear space= A clear mind=More productivity.
Plan a vacation-please make good use of your work leave or holiday, don’t stress yourself just relax and have a great time. Even at work make use of your lunch break.
Work stays at work, turn off your work cell phone once you walk off your workplace. Remember you are done for the day and your personal time remains your personal time. Please note this advice is not valid for a work emergency.
